Janita Rantanen is a dance artist and teacher based in Ivalo, Finland.
In addition to her dance degree, she has a professional degree in media.
Rantanen has worked professionally as a versatile dancer, dance teacher and choreographer all over Finland and also in Germany and Norway since 2009.
As a dance artist, she is interested in encounters through dance art, community and new performance platforms, as well as working with video and nature.
In the North, Rantanen has performed e.g. at the top of Kiilopää fell, at the Sámi museum Siida Viidon Sieiddit exhibition and as the first dancer in history in the churches of Enontekiö and Inari.
Rantanen has increased art dance education in primary schools around Finland, e.g. through the new cultural education program now in Inari and formerly in the city of Tampere.
In addition to schools, she has visited as a dance teacher and performer in service homes, kindergartens and child protection units and worked with special children.

In 2019, Rantanen was awarded the Inari municipality's culture award.

Tanja is a choreographer, dancer and artistic director of TaikaBox - Oulu based dance/technology organisation. Tanja studied worked as a dance artist in the UK for 18 years before moving back to Finland in 2015. She founded TaikaBox in 2010 together with her long-term collaborator video artist John Collingswood. Tanja is interested in exploring dance in a rural context, developing new ways to collaborate with fellow artists in distant locations and to engage small communities in dance. She is interested in promoting positive body image and exploring the fundamental power in arts to re-shape people's perceptions of everyday life, as well as politics and society. As a choreographer and performer she is interested in the relationship between movement and new technology, challenges that technology places on choreography and new opportunities that it can offer. Tanja considers the use of technology in her choreographic work as organic and live – as an extension of physical expression.

Pirjo Yli-Maunula
OULU, FINLND
Oulu based dance artist Pirjo Yli-Maunula works as the artistic director of Flow Productions which is a production company that produces its´own work and organizes a series of visiting shows under the title Flow Circus. Flow´s office and home stage are in Cultre Centre Valve.
Pirjo strives in her artistic expression to humanity, honesty and openness. Early years of living in a culture where things are left unspoken made her fascinated by physical expression and the means of conveying emotions without words. Being exposed is a driving force for Yli-Maunula, and this raw sincerity not only describes her work, but is something that she is strongly drawn to in other artists’ work.
Taboos, the subconscious, things we don’t feel comfortable speaking about often find a shape in Yli-Maunula’s work. In addition to stage work, she has created several immersive, site-specific pieces which have now become the main focus of her work.
“In immersive pieces I have been able to find ways to create multisensory and participatory experiences and they have been received with extraordinary fascination and warmth by their audiences. In the future I hope to concentrate even more on creating this kind of work and these kinds of worlds,” Yli-Maunula says.
Dialogue has been extremely important to Yli-Maunula throughout her considerable career. It defines her relationships with her creative teams, with her general operating environment and with the art community at large. In addition to her work as a dancer, director and choreographer, she has many other roles, such as producer and curator. All these roles have given her various perspectives to the artistic process. Yli-Maunula works in collective, multidisciplinary, non-hierarchical and networked processes. Sharing authorship is very important for her, and fellow artists who have worked with Yli-Maunula say they have been given ample space for their own creative process as well as trust and a sense of a making a truly shared work.
Yli-Maunula has been recognized for her work on many occasions. She was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland in 2019. The Arts Centre Finland granted her the Artist Professor Grant for 2014-2018. The North Ostrobothnia Regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation granted her a recognition award in 2018. The latest awards are the Pirkko-award from Oulun kulttuuritapahtumayhdistys and the achievement award from Pentti Kaitera foundation in 2022.
Yli-Maunula is very committed to the development of culture and the arts in Oulu and North of Finland. Yli-Maunula’s stated goal is to bring diversity to the cultural offerings available to Oulu and provide the people of Oulu with world-class experiences and truly unique content.

Riikka Johanna Kosola
TANA, NORWAY
Riikka Johanna Kosola is a Norway-based Finnish-French artist. As a dancer, choreographer and performer she creates multidisciplinary projects with spatial thinking. Her current living spots are in Tana, in Tenoriver-sides in both Norway and Finland, and in Turku.

Anniina Ukkonen
TURKU/TORNIO, FINLAND
Anniina Ukkonen is a dance artist and dance teacher from Finnish Lapland. Ukkonen works extensively as a dancer, dance teacher, and choreographer in various interdisciplinary art projects in both Southern Finland and Lapland.
Currently, Ukkonen is particularly interested in different art forms of physical theater, such as mask theater and mime. In her work, Ukkonen combines various elements of physical theater and contemporary dance. Anniina has developed her artistic practice, mask dance practice, which combines mask theater and dance. Ukkonen works with two masks: the comedic Larval mask and the Mask of Torne Valley, made of linen by mask maker Johanna Oksanen. The Mask of Torne Valley reflects Ukkonen’s roots of the Torne Valley with its colors, shapes, and essence. The mask embodies perseverance, pride, independence, toughness, and sensitivity. Ukkonen performs masked dance performances, for instance, in connection with art exhibitions.
Ukkonen created the sympathetic Larval mask character, Hönttä “Hönttis” Hilpurainen. As Hönttis, she visits daycare centers, preschools, and various children’s events. In addition to her practice, Ukkonen works as a welfare artist at the Regional Dance Centre of Western Finland and is interested in bringing dance art to various age groups. As a dance teacher, Anniina hopes to motivate students, with her style seasoned with humor, to express themselves boldly through dance.

"My main interests in making performing arts are interaction, nature and power relationships as well as open, honest and present way to be. I get enthusiastic by different spaces and surroundings and their role in a performance. My most loved method is guided improvisation, though I also enjoy technical training (even very detailed work for too long time). I work rather in a group than alone. The best place to work is by the sea or in a forest, but once in a while I also need a flat floor. For me dance is interaction and a way to be in this world. Being curious, playfull, brave and loving towards myself and others as well as work ethics are also important values for me in work (and in life generally). ”

Riikka Tolonen
JOENSUU / YLITORNIO
Riikka Tolonen is a dance artist and dance teacher, from Ylitornio in Northern Finland. She has graduated as a dance pedagogue from Savonia University of Applied Sciences, Kuopio (2016). At the moment she is also studying sociology of arts in the University of Eastern Finland. At the moment Riikka is living in Joensuu but she is doing various projects in different communities as a danceartist and a teacher around Finland.
Riikka is interested in reasearching interaction. She thinks that respect and caring in encounters with people and art are very important. Reflecting art works in relation to power and working towards etchically sustainable art is something she demands.
Olen tanssitaiteilija kotoisin Ylitorniolta Tornionjokilaaksosta. Asun ja työskentelen tällä hetkellä Joensuussa sekä opiskelen taiteensosiologiaa Itä-Suomen yliopistossa.
Valmistuin tanssinopettajaksi Savonia ammattikorkeakoulusta 2016 ja olen työskennellyt siitä lähtien useissa eri hankkeissa, teoksissa ja yhteisöissä laajasti tanssin saralla. Minua kiinnostaa erityisesti yhteisöllinen tanssitaide. Tärkeimpiä tanssitaiteellisia töitäni viime vuosilta ovat muun muassa interaktiivinen lastentanssiteos Liikkuva Lautapeli 2021, Tanssilähettiläiden Paikan tanssi -konsepti vuosina 2019–2022 sekä Tornionjokilaakson lapsille suunnattu Taiteillen-hanke vuonna 2018. Yhteiskunnallinen vaikuttaminen ja verkostoituminen on minulle tärkeätä; toimin puheenjohtajana Pohjois-Karjalan tanssitaiteen tuki ry yhdistyksessä ja kuulun Itä-Suomen tanssin aluekeskuksen hallitukseen.
Arvostan työskentelyssäni lempeän kohtaamisen dynamiikkaa, johon pyrin työkollegoiden kanssa sekä taiteen kokijoiden kanssa. Pidän kollektiivisesta toiminnasta ja ylistän yhteisön voimaa. Haluan lisätä tanssia matalalla kynnyksellä ja iloitsen kaikenlaisesta liikkeestä.

Riikka Tolonen is a dance artist and dance teacher, from Ylitornio in Northern Finland. She has graduated as a dance pedagogue from Savonia University of Applied Sciences, Kuopio (2016). At the moment she is also studying sociology of arts in the University of Eastern Finland. At the moment Riikka is living in Joensuu but she is doing various projects in different communities as a danceartist and a teacher around Finland.
Riikka is interested in reasearching interaction. She thinks that respect and caring in encounters with people and art are very important. Reflecting art works in relation to power and working towards etchically sustainable art is something she demands.
Olen tanssitaiteilija kotoisin Ylitorniolta Tornionjokilaaksosta. Asun ja työskentelen tällä hetkellä Joensuussa sekä opiskelen taiteensosiologiaa Itä-Suomen yliopistossa.
Valmistuin tanssinopettajaksi Savonia ammattikorkeakoulusta 2016 ja olen työskennellyt siitä lähtien useissa eri hankkeissa, teoksissa ja yhteisöissä laajasti tanssin saralla. Minua kiinnostaa erityisesti yhteisöllinen tanssitaide. Tärkeimpiä tanssitaiteellisia töitäni viime vuosilta ovat muun muassa interaktiivinen lastentanssiteos Liikkuva Lautapeli 2021, Tanssilähettiläiden Paikan tanssi -konsepti vuosina 2019–2022 sekä Tornionjokilaakson lapsille suunnattu Taiteillen-hanke vuonna 2018. Freelance dance artist, choreographer and pedagog working in the Northern dancefield. As an artist I am inspired by the color blue as a way of being, feeling and sensing the world. In my work I translate these blue elements into movement and I also work a lot from the perspective of fears and the layers that they bring to the body. As a performer I enjoy collaborating with a wide range of artists and audiences. There is always growth and new inspiration when working with a new team.
In my choreographic work I focus on working with the space and direction in it and from there I end up telling a story. My work as a pedagog is seen mostly in the forms of workshops and regional projects where I work towards supporting the Northern dance field.
Olen Oulussa asuva freelance tanssitaiteilija. Työskentelen tanssijana, tanssinopettajana ja koreografina Taiteilijana minua inspiroi sinisyys, värinä, tunnelmana, äänenä ja kokemuksena. Sinisyys on usein alkusysäys teosten prosessissa. Työskentelen myös paljon pelkojen parissa, niiden keholliset kerrosten ja ilmentymien kautta. Esiintyjänä työskentelen laajasti erilaisten työryhmien ja taiteenalojen ja yleisöjen parissa. Nautin siitä miten jokaisessa prosessissa on tilaa tekijyyden syventämiseen ja inspiroitumiseen.
Koreografina työskentelen tilasta ja sen ehdottamista suunnista käsin, päätyen lopulta kertomaan tarinan. Pedagogina minua kiinnostaa erityisesti työ alueellisen kehittämisen parissa sekä työpajojen muodossa. Kaiken keskiössä on työ Pohjoisen tanssinkentän edistämiseksi.

Rebecca Laube-Pohto is a Finnish dance artist, choreographer, and educator with a rich and diverse background that spans multiple cultures and dance forms. She has studied and immersed herself in dance around the world, exploring everything from contemporary dance to hip hop, classical ballet, improvisation and various dance forms across other cultures. Her practice is deeply influenced by her experiences traveling and connecting with people from different cultural backgrounds, which has shaped her approach to movement and performance.
For 20 years, Laube-Pohto has shared her dance knowledge, teaching everything from amateur to professional workshops, and working with artists both in Finland and internationally. As the co-founder and artistic director of the Keskellä Collective, she fosters collaboration and innovation, creating a space for diverse artistic voices. Her recent work and intrests focuses on themes of body memory, the oceans, and full-body expressions—drawing connections between movement, space, and cultural exchange.
Laube-Pohto’s choreography and performances have taken her to numerous countries, including Belgium, Portugal, Colombia, Japan, and India. She continues to be inspired by the ever-evolving nature of movement and the potential for connection that dance offers across cultures.

Since 1991, after graduating with a Master of Dance Arts from the University of Arts in Helsinki, I have established myself as a multifaceted dance artist, working as a dancer, choreographer, teacher, producer and mentor. After returning to Northern Finland in 1997, I have actively promoted the visibility of dance in the region, bringing performances to unconventional spaces, creating multidisciplinary productions, and fostering international collaborations.
Central to my practice are the themes and concepts of place, situation, audience, collaboration, and improvisation. I have created performances in numerous environments, from public spaces and factories to private homes, nature, stages, and festivals across Finland, the Northern regions, and beyond.
My practice is rooted in somatic approaches, particularly the Skinner Releasing Technique. I feel a deep interconnectedness with the environment through my generational roots in the North but also with the everyday I am living in close to nature. My work is driven by curiosity, play, and embodied awareness, nurturing a deep sense of presence. With a commitment to sustainable moving, these principles continuously fuel my creativity and provide an ongoing momentum for my work.
The Finnish Community Dance Association named me Community Dance Artist of the Year for 2014–15. In 2020, I was awarded the Dance Merit Award by the Finnish Dance and Circus Artists Association, and in 2024, I was awarded the Finnish Performing Arts’ Gold Medal with a Purple Stripe.

Taiteellinen työni keskittyy paikan, tilanteen, yleisön, yhteistyön ja improvisaation vuorovaikutukseen. Olen jo vuosia yhdistänyt taiteelliseen työskentelyyni yhteisötaiteellisia elementtejä ja vienyt tanssia ihmisten arkeen sinne missä he luontaisesti päivittäin ovat ja toimivat. Olen luonut ja tuottanut teoksia monenlaisiin ympäristöihin – julkisiin tiloihin, tehtaisiin, sairaaloihin, yksityiskoteihin, luontoon sekä näyttämöille ja tapahtumapaikoille eri puolilla Suomea, Pohjoiskalotilla ja laajemminkin. Minua ohjaavat välittömyyden, lempeyden, kestävyyden ja toimijuuden mahdollisuudet.
Vuonna 2024 sain Suomen Näyttämötaiteen kultaisen kunniamerkin violetilla raidalla paikallisen taidetyön erittäin ansiokkaasta edistämisestä. Vuonna 2020 minut palkittiin Suomen Tanssi- ja Sirkustaiteilijoiden Liiton Tanssin Mainetekopalkinnolla. Yhteisö tanssii ry nimesi minut Vuoden Yhteisötanssitaiteilijaksi ajalle 2014-15.
